Oct. 13, 2011

A low pressure system off the Pacific Coast that had been threatening our weekend weather is now forecast to break free from the westerlies and become what is known as a cut-off low this weekend. That means it will drift south off the coast of California for a few days before finding its way back into the flow of the jet stream.

The movement of this kind of system is hard to predict, but as of now it looks as if the storm will drift inland by early next week, perhaps Tuesday. Its current projected track would take it over the Northern Sierra, mostly north of Tahoe. We should see cooler tremperatures and some cloud cover with a chance of rain and snow. Snow levels would be above 7000 feet, most likely.

In the meantime, the weekend looks fair, with temperatures about 10 degrees above normal today and Friday and then gradually cooling toward normal as the weekend progresses.

LA NINA UPDATE

A weak La Nina condition remains in place across the Central Pacific in early Fall, with sea surface temperatures in the region at least .5 degrees below normal. The condition is expected to strengthen a bit as we head from fall into winter, but remain weaker than last season's La Nina. A La Nina condition, even a weak one, is expected to mean a colder and wetter winter in the Pacific Northwest and a drier season in the Southwest. Sitting between these two, Tahoe is dependent on the whims of each storm and how far the jet stream dips south. Last season, of course, we got nearly every storm that came off the Pacific. One thing that should be true is that we are less likely to see the kind of big, warm, wet storm that comes off the Southern Pacific. The storms we do get will tend to be smaller, and colder, but they can add up, and they can bump up against each other to produce plenty of powder.

Tahoe Outdoors: Tahoe Rim Trail group seeks volunteers

The Tahoe Rim Trail Association is seeking volunteers on two major trail-building projects: Rim to Reno and Daggett Summit. No experience is necessary. The projects will take place every Thursday and Saturday in October. The group asks that you register in advance so they have enough crew leaders, tools, safety gear, etc. Volunteers should bring their own lunch & water, wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants, boots, & work gloves, and bring sunscreen, bug spray, water & a backpack. The Tahoe Rim Trail Associationwill provide hard hats, trail building tools and expert crew leaders.
