Incline Village Real Estate Weekend Weather and La Nina Forecast
Sept. 8, 2011
This could be a wet weekend for parts of the Tahoe Basin and the surrounding Sierra.
A low pressure system coming in off the Pacific is forecast to park itself off the coast of California and send a significant amount of moisture our way. This, combined with the late summer heat, should lead to the formation of widespread thunderstorms.
The best chance for storms today and Friday will be south of Highway 50 and east of the mountains. But a secondary low on Saturday will increase chances for thunderstorms in the Tahoe Basin south of Interstate 80. Strong afternoon winds are also possible in the Tahoe Basin, especially on Friday.
Temperatures should remain a few degrees above normal for this time of year through Friday, followed by a modest cooling trend into the weekend.

La Nina Update
La Nina conditions have returned to the Pacific Ocean, with sea surface temperatures dropping below normal. The conditions are expected to strengthen in the fall and into the coming winter, in line with historical patterns of a strong La Nina followed by a weak La Nina year. The US Climate Prediction Center says this should lead to an increased chance of precipitation in the Pacific Northwest, and La Nina typically means lower precipitation for the Southwest, with Tahoe sitting in the middle. The early guess is that this should mean we'll see a cooler winter, with frequent, modest storms that nail Washington and Oregon but are never a sure thing for the Tahoe Basin until their final trajectory is established. Last winter most of those chances ended up being direct hits, and we had an incredible year. But a slight change in the track of a few of those storms would have altered the end result dramatically. The same will likely be true this year.
