Tahoe is heading into a holiday weekend that could begin on the sloppy side and finish with a day or two that feel like spring.

A strong ridge of high pressure off the coast of Southern California is shunting most our winter weather to the north. Temperatures will be rising into the 50s at 5000 feet this weekend, and into the 40s at the higher elevations.

But a couple of warm systems carrying tropical moisture are forecast to brush past Tahoe, bringing a threat of light rain and snow.

The first will arrive today. While most of its punch is expected to land on Oregon, the storm could bring some precip to the Tahoe Basin. If it does, snow levels would start out below 7000 feet because of the cold air now in place. But the warmer air carried by this system will quickly take the lead, and snow levels will rise to above 7000 feet. Fortunately it's looking like this storm will not drop a lot of rain on our mountains. But neither will we get much snow.

Another system is on track to pass through Northern California Saturday night. This one will also be on the warm side, with snow levels even higher. But it's looking like most of its precipitation will fall north of Interstate 80.

By midday Sunday we should be dry and warm, with similar conditions expected for Monday.

No major storms are yet in the long-term forecast. But early rumblings from the Central and South Pacific are suggesting that a wet end of the month is still in store for us. If everything breaks right, we could see another stretch like the series of storms that buried us in late December.

But that's a ways off. For now, stay dry and look for those spring-like conditions.

Tahoe Outdoors: Coming events

The Sierra Avalanche Center will be partnering with two area ski resorts on fundraisers in the coming days. You can get 68% off a day of skiing and riding at Bear Valley on Jan. 14. Along with your day of skiing, you will have a chance to ask the forecasters and the Board of Directors any questions you might have and enter to win a variety of cool prizes at the Ski Day. See you there. Tickets must be redeemed at the SAC booth on the day of the event. On Jan. 22, enjoy 49% off a day of skiing at Mt. Rose. The entire cost of your ticket supports the Sierra Avalanche Center.

The next show in the Lake Tahoe Adventure Slide Show Series sponsored by The BackCountry will be on Saturday, Jan. 15 at Squaw Valley Olympic Plaza Bar.  Dan Mingori is a Bishop local High Sierra ski touring fanatic, author of the latest backcountry Eastern Sierra Ski touring Guidebook, and unreal photographer. His show "Ticklists" will ring true with a lot of you. Oly Plaza Bar is above Dave's Deli, at the bottom of the mountain. Shows start right at 8 pm this year and usually last one hour. Arrive early for a seat. There is comfortable seating for about 200, and pretty good standing room for another 100. Most shows fill the room completely by 8:10 and the show has started.
