The divergent economic indicators resemble so many tea leaves, daring us to read some conclusion into their shape and color at the bottom of our teacups. Because the near-term future of the economy will be decided as much by politicians as by the usual market forces, we really can't predict what the next several weeks will bring. Further, we are entering the final weeks of the year--a time of tax-inspired sales and purchases, of changing the complexion of portfolios, of losing our way. It is probably wisest to make few changes and watch very closely, with treacherous forces raging like strong gusts of wind on the investment markets. Most investors are thinking defensively at the moment.

That said, there is nonetheless much reason to watch the real estate markets closely in the coming months. We may see the recovery, such as it is, conjured up by the magic of newly-designed dwellings that are long on energy efficiency and wise uses of space. We'll be watching--especially the new homes market.
