Sept. 1, 2011

The first weekend of September should be a nice one in Tahoe and throughout the Sierra Nevada.

The region is sitting between two ridges of high pressure, one off the coast and another over the Southwestern U.S.

The result will be a slow warming trend, with very little moisture and thus a low threat of thunderstorms.

Temperatures should be close to normal by Saturday along the lake and at the higher elevations around the Basin.

A weak low pressure system pushing in from the coast late in the weekend might pull some subtropical moisture toward Tahoe but is not likely to result in any serious storm activity.

A stronger ridge of high pressure over the interior US should nudge temperatures even higher by the middle of next week.

Ride of the week

Check out this moderate 9-mile mountain bike loop through the forest along the ridge between Squaw and Northstar.

Have you ever considered circling Lake Tahoe on your bike? For any reasonably fit person, the ride is actually not that hard -- about 72 miles with the biggest issue probably being the traffic. It's best to try it in the spring or fall, when tourist traffic is lighter. If you would rather do it in a group, there's an organized ride with support scheduled for Sept. 11.
