Dec. 1 2011

December will get off to a mostly dry and windy start today, followed by what looks like an extended dry but chilly period over the next week and possibly well into the month.

The culprit is a ridge of high pressure that's sitting off the Pacific coast, forcing all the storms north, up into Alaska and British Columbia before they drop back down into the US interior.

The latest storm system is moving through the Great Basin today on its way south, kicking up winds and bringing a dusting of back-door snow to parts of the Sierra. Wind gusts of 150 mph were recorded this morning at 11,000 feet on Mammoth Mountain, but that's the limit of their sensors, and estimates peg the actual wind speed at about 180 mph. The winds were not quite as strong along the Sierra Crest around Tahoe, but they're not anything you'd want to be out in.

Those winds should die down today but will increase again on Saturday before relaxing again. It looks like we could get another system sliding down the eastern slope early next week, bringing another dose of high winds, cold temperatures and perhaps another dusting of snow coming at us from the east. But no major accumulations are in the forecast.

The current outlook shows the high pressure drifting slowly west through the first part of December, eventually reaching a point over the Central Pacific that will leave room for those storms to drop down the coast again after passing through the Gulf of Alaska. But as of now it looks as if that will not happen until around the middle of the month. Let's hope the models are wrong!
