Feb. 10 2011

Winter is about to return to Incline Village folks.!!!

But not before one more balmy weekend. The high pressure that's been keeping our weather unseasonably warm for most of this year is breaking down and preparing to move east. It will get a nudge from a Gulf of Alaska storm that will pass to our north on Sunday, bringing cooler temperatures but no precipitation to the Tahoe Basin. Until then, we'll see temperatures 5 to 10 degrees above normal for mid-February.

Then, by Monday night, we should see the leading edge of our first big winter storm since New Years Week. Snow levels are likely to start out around or above 5000 feet and then drop as the cold front moves through on Tuesday. Another storm will come right behind, likely arriving by Thursday. These storms won't be especially wet, but cold temperatures will mean a high snow-to-water ratio, and that should mean several feet of new snow by Presidents Day Weekend.

A plume of moisture over the Pacific is also moving our way and could become entrained in the second storm and others to follow. Once the momentum shifts we should be in for more storms, back to a typical mid-winter weather pattern.

Check with me, Tim Lampe at 775 745 9730 for updates as the pattern begins to change.
